FLUXUS: February 16 through March 31st.
FLUXUS: TO GEORGE WITH LOVE, FROM THE PERSONAL COLLECTION
OF JONAS MEKAS
The items in this exhibition came into my possession during the twenty-five
years—1952-1978—of friendship and working together with George Maciunas.
This is a personal exhibition with no intention of giving an overview of what
Fluxus was all about. But it will give you a glimpse of the range of Maciunas
interests: the design, music, film, architecture, games, travels and tours, the
creation of SoHo, his genius for systematization, his politics and his work with
many international artists such as Nam June Paik, Joseph Bueys, Ben Vautier, Henry
Flynt, George Brecht, Yoko Ono, Joe Jones, and many others.
I said “a glimpse” because of the voluminousness of Maciunas’
life’s work. George was an insomniac and he worked day and night with his
tiny TV on and listening to music, mostly Monteverdi. He was a very generous soul
and liked to share with others what he did and he liked to make his friends happy
with presents. I regret not being able to treat you with Beef Bourgingnon of which
George was a specialist and liked to cook for his friends.
The exhibition will also include the Fluxfilm Anthology, a collection of 43 short
films by some 30 Fluxus artists, commissioned by George, and several slide pieces
such as 12 Big Names and the Black Slides.
